Goodell Reaffirms Bounty Suspensions

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is reaffirming the suspensions of four players involved in the New Orleans Saints bounty case.  Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma remains suspended for the season but will not lose his salary for the six games he was on the physically unable to perform list.  Saints defensive end Will Smith remains suspended four games, Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita's [[ fuh-JEE-tuh's ]] suspension is reduced from three games to one, and free-agent defensive end Anthony Hargrove's suspension is reduced from eight games to seven.  The initial suspensions were vacated by a collective bargaining panel before the start of the season.

Hargrove is currently unsigned but will get credit for the five games he has already missed if he is picked up by a another team.  Goodell was told by the panel to go back and clarify the language of the initial suspensions.  The panel ruled that pay-for-performance bonuses are a salary cap issue not under his jurisdiction, while pay-to-injure bonuses are an on-field issue that are under his jurisdiction.  The Players' Association says it will review Goodell's decision thoroughly and consider its options.
