Wapella Christian Church Uses Proceeds From Apple and Pork For Youth Group

The vendors on the grounds of the CH Moore Homestead during the Apple and Pork weekend are all non-profit groups who use the Apple and Pork Festival as a way to raise money.

One such non-profit is the Wapella Christian Church. For the past ten years, Wapella Christian has been setting up selling corn on the cob. Pastor of the Church, Phil Yakey explains the proceeds from their sales go towards to the youth groups activities.

Before the festival even begins, the Church has to prepare the corn. Pastor Yakey explains the purchase the corn from IGA, bring it back to the church and prepare it for the next day. Yakey says throughout the day they will cook the corn crates at a time, with two kettle boiling all the time.

Pastor Yakey says each year the church will bring in around $25-hundred and the money goes to a couple of events the church tries to do annually. The first is a ski trip they take up north, and the other is to a summer youth conference called Christ in Youth.

The church bought around 3700 ears of corn and their goal was to sell half Saturday and half Sunday.
