30 Named To Volunteerism Commission

Gov. Pat Quinn is announcing 30 new members to the Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.

Serve Illinois is supported by the Illinois Department of Human Services and aids the AmeriCorps state program. The new commissioners will meet Wednesday for the first time in Springfield and serve 3-year terms.

The announcement was made in advance of Thursday's National Service Recognition Day. The ceremony at the state Capitol, called "Everyone Can Serve," will feature nearly 1,000 Illinois residents taking a pledge of another year of helping communities through service.

A parade will follow in downtown Springfield.

Quinn announced $8.4 million in federal money earlier this year for Illinois' AmeriCorps programs. AmeriCorps volunteers give a year of service in education, human services, environmental quality, health and safety.
