Decatur Looks To Wells For Drought Relief

The Decatur City Council has decided to spend $1.59 million to drill four temporary water wells to supplement the local water supply during the drought.

The wells also will allow a consulting firm hired by the city to determine whether permanent wells can be drilled at the site.

The city relies on Lake Decatur for water. But the reservoir has dropped during this year's drought to levels low enough to require water-use restrictions.

City officials say 2 of the wells would pump water straight into the lake and two would pump into an old gravel pit used as a backup water supply.

Assistant City Manager Jerry Bauer says the wells should be drilled within 80 days.
