Illinois Party Leaders Ante Up For Legislative Races

Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has spent more than $6.5 million on legislative elections in just the past seven months. That's 50% more than campaign funds he controls spent during the same period in 2010.

An analysis shows the state's political parties and legislative leaders spent $17 million overall since the March primary. That's 53% more than in 2010.

The pricier campaign comes even as Democrats hold majorities in both legislative chambers and President Barack Obama is back on top of the ticket.

The 2010 Census required redrawing legislative maps to reflect population shifts, so all 59 seats in the Senate are up when usually no more than two-thirds are. But spending per seat also is up significantly, according to figures through the end of September.
