Knox College officials say a student is dead after a hit and run accident.
A campus bulletin was released Sunday informing students of the death of Tundun Lawani. College officials say she was struck by a car as she crossed a street.
Police say the incident happened around 3:30 a.m. and Lawani was transported to Galesburg Cottage Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Authorities say a 33-year-old Galesburg woman has been charged in connection with the death. Lakeesha Smith was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a fatality and no valid insurance, among other things. She's due in court on Monday.
A listed number for Smith couldn't be located. It was immediately unclear if she had an attorney.
