A former Kankakee County Board member has pleaded guilty in federal court to filing a false income tax return.
Larry Dean Gibbs of St. Anne entered an open plea of guilty to one count of filling a false return. U.S. Attorney James Lewis says Gibbs admitted he was not entitled to the $66,000 refund from the Internal Revenue Service he received in 2005 for a trust called the "Larry Dean Gibbs Trust."
Gibbs will be sentenced in March. He faces a prison sentence of up to three years, a $100,000 fine and a restitution order. He might also have to pay a tax-fraud penalty.
Gibbs is free on bond. But U.S. District Judge Michael McCuskey ordered him imprisoned for 14 days in August for repeatedly filing frivolous court claims.
