Authorities in Illinois say the key to a safe Halloween is commonsense, but the officials are also offering up some tips.
They recommend trick-or-treating during daylight hours and in familiar neighborhoods.
Safety experts also recommend dressing in light-colored costumes and choosing painted makeup over masks, which could restrict children's vision. Also, don't accept candy or treats that aren't wrapped.
Police say it's also a good time to remind children not to talk to strangers.
Some community groups are hosting Halloween events for children that are an alternative to trick-or-treating.
Authorities across the area say several communities will be hosting Halloween activities where they'll be giving away candy.
