Illinois Abortion Foe Makes Quixotic Bid For Congress

Avid abortion foe Angela Michael admits she doesn't have much of a chance of toppling Republican Rep. John Shimkus in an Illinois congressional race. But the activist is using it as a bigger platform for her pet issue.

Michael is a self-described conservative but running for the 15th Congressional District as a Democrat. She's exploiting an opening on the ballot after no Democrat chose to run against Shimkus, a 16-year congressman.

Democratic leaders are ignoring her. Her campaign coffers as of mid-October had less than $500, while Shimkus' war chest was more than $1 million. A Republican has held the seat for all but two years since 1939.

The district encompassing more than 30 counties stretches from Ford County south to Massac County along the Ohio River.
