Springfield Schools Plan Calls For Job Cuts

The head of Springfield's school system is proposing nearly $8 million in budget cuts, including the elimination of almost 100 teaching jobs.

Springfield School Superintendent Walter Milton released his budget plan Wednesday for the 2013-14 school year, calling for the elimination of a total of 139 positions and the closure of 2 schools. The non-teaching jobs being cut include librarians, administrators and custodians.

School officials say it isn't clear how many of the cuts would be through attrition and how many would involve layoffs.

Milton called the budgeting process "arduous" and says he and his cabinet spent more than 50 hours deliberating over the plan.

The school board still needs to approve the budget plan.
