McLean County Voters Eliminate Recorder's Office

Officials in McLean County are moving forward with plans to have the county clerk's office take over the functions now held by the recorder's office.

Voters approved a referendum to eliminate the recorder's office. That's a move opposed by McLean County Recorder Lee Newcom, who was re-elected Tuesday in an uncontested race.

Newcom says voters didn't get enough information about the subject and he calls Tuesday's vote "a shot in the dark." He says he worries the county's 100-year-old records won't be properly maintained.

The referendum eliminates Newcom's position as of Dec. 31, 2013.

McLean County Clerk Kathy Michael says she's looking forward to the transition process so the county can train staff and get a budget in place to combine the two offices.
