Local Lawmaker Disappointed By Republican Party Showing At Last Week's Election

One local legislator is not happy with the showing of the Republican Party at last Tuesday's election.

Representative Bill Mitchell says downstate Republicans took a "drubbing" at the election. He felt as though the Republican candidates could have been better, and they need to work harder.

With the seven losses in the Illinois House, the Democrats now hold a super-majority. Rep. Mitchell's biggest concern with a super-majority in favor of the Democrats is that a borrowing bill can now be passed without any republican say. Financially, Illinois is in one of the worst situations in the country, and Rep. Mitchell feels this may not be the best thing for Illinois at this time.

Perhaps the biggest reason Democrats hold a super-majority in both the House and Senate would be thanks to redistricting. 2010 was a census year, and in a census year, the district maps are redrawn. Because Democrats the controlled the legislator, they were the ones to redraw the maps, and it is no secret they drew the maps up very much in their favor. Mitchell says that along with Republicans being outspent nearly two-and-a-half to one was the demise of the party this election.

Rep. Mitchell feels if Republicans are to regain any sort of numbers in the House and Senate, they need to find candidates who are willing to work to be good legislators.

Rep. Mitchell says many of the problems facing the state at this time are not Republican or Democrat issues, and the two parties need to work in a bi-partisan way to make things better for the citizens of Illinois.
