Quinn: My Focus Is On Pension Reform

Republican lawmakers in Illinois worry Democrats will try to make permanent a tax hike that passed last year and is supposed to expire at the end of 2014. Governor Quinn refutes that idea, claiming there are bigger issues to deal with.

The extra cash from the tax increase was supposed to go toward paying down the state's backlog of unpaid bills but Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka has said that hasn't been the case. She says lawmakers have used much of the extra cash to fund other services in the budget. The state had a six-billion dollar backlog when the tax hike passed and today, that backlog sits at over eight-billion dollars.
