Out of State of Enrollment Up At University of Illinois

A published report says that 25% of University of Illinois undergraduates at the flagship campus are from outside Illinois, which is a departure from years past when officials pledged to limit out-of-state enrollment.

The change is expected to continue.

In 2006 when the university announced plans to enroll more students from outside Illinois, there was public outcry and the plan was dropped. Officials said they'd limit out-of-state enrollment to roughly 12%.

Enrollment at the Urbana-Champaign campus is nearly 32,000, more than 3,500 students a decade ago. But there are 200 fewer from Illinois while the number of international students - who pay more tuition - skyrocketed.

The university is accepting more out-of-staters and Illinois students are increasingly turning down admission.
