Illinois Faces Hard Choices With Gun Laws

The clock is ticking for Illinois lawmakers to come up with a law approving the concealed carry of weapons after a federal appellate court's decision to throw out the state's ban on concealed guns.

The court gave the Legislature 180 days to craft a new law, but they could choose from a range of options already in place in 49 other states.

Democratic State Rep. Brandon Phelps says it is unlikely gun rights advocates will agree to restrictive bills like New York's or California's. He said he would push for a law that has fewer concessions than a defeated bill he proposed last year.

House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie said it will be hard for lawmakers not to vote for restrictions after tragedies like the recent shootings in Connecticut.
