Educators Suggest Using Winter Break To Read

Illinois students might be ready for the winter break from school, but education officials are encouraging them not to take a break from reading.

The Illinois State Board of Education is reminding students and their families to keep reading during winter break. They recommend books and texts that will help students develop literacy and college preparedness.

But it shouldn't all be work. Education officials encourage students to read for entertainment too.

Officials say parents and guardians should discuss tips with teachers about appropriate reading material. They also recommend guiding children through reading. For example, ask them to read with a specific purpose in mind.

Another tip is setting aside a family reading time.
