Preparing For Power Outages

Winter weather conditions could knock out power in many homes and businesses across the state. Leigh Morris with Ameren Illinois says people should have an emergency kit on hand, just in case.

Partof that emergency kit should be non-perishable food items. Morris says make sure the foods don't need to be warmed up.

Morris says one very important item is often left out of the safety kit.

People who take regular medications should be sure to have extras on hand. Morris urges people not to use candles because they can fall over and start a fire. He says it's a good idea to keep at least one light switch on so you know when power comes back on. Morris says if everyone's power comes on except your - first, check the fuse box. If that's not the issue, call the company. Ameren is working on upgrading its system, which will minimize outages and help restore power more quickly.
