Lincoln's Five-Year Capital Plan In Place

A 5-year capital improvement plan in Lincoln has been put together and has should be put in motion this coming spring.

City officials have been working on this 5-year plan, which would begin for Fiscal Year 14, that begins May 1 of next spring. Lincoln Mayor Keith Snyder explains the five-year plan has projects for each of the fiscal years 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18. He explains the plan begins with addressing the streets most in need first, and then progressing from there.

While the moneys from a sales tax the voters of Lincoln approved for capital improvements will help fund a good portion of things, the Mayor hopes to take advantage of grant opportunities for some of their other goals. He explains they currently have a grant application in for some downtown streetscape work, and he believes having some plans in place for future, unknown grant opportunities would better their chances to get future funding.

Maybe the poorest street conditions are on the brick streets in the city of Lincoln. Mayor Snyder says their goal is to preserve as much of the brick streets as possible. He notes one stretch of road in Lincoln, on Pulaski Street may have the brick removed permanently and restored with concrete.

This plan development has been several months in the making. Mayor Snyder explains they were forced to contract with an outside firm because they had their City Engineer take another job, but they hired a local firm, Prairie Engineers.

Mayor Snyder hopes to begin getting some of their target work out for bid yet this winter and get ahead of the construction bid season in hopes of receiving lower bids.
