Resources Available to Veterans With PTSD

The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs is reminding those who've served in the military that free resources are available to help with post-traumatic stress disorder or other challenges associated with returning from combat.

The department notes that the holidays can be an especially difficult time for veterans struggling to cope with their experiences.

Department Director Erica Borggren says "it is important for veterans to understand that seeking help for symptoms of PTSD is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength."

The Illinois Warrior Assistance Program is a free and confidential service provided by the state of Illinois. They include PTSD screening and diagnosis, and help paying for outpatient PTSD treatment for the uninsured.

PTSD symptoms can include trouble sleeping or concentrating, as well as anger and irritability.
