Social Security Sees Rise In Retirment Applications To Close Year

As the new year approaches, the number of prospective retirees get bigger.

Jack Meyers, with Social Security, says the majority of retirees prefer to retire at the end of the calendar year. This means that the number of retirement applications are numerous during the month of December. Myers says that finishing at the end of the year provides those retiring with a sense of accomplishment. He says that it's never too early to start planning for retirement.

Myers says that there are several tools that can help in retirement planning. The Social Security website is one one of those helpful tools. Statements and estimators can help give a future retiree an educated estimate as to how much they will receive during the years of retirement.

Myers says that the website is pretty accurate and gets even more accurate with its projections as one gets closer to the retirement years. He also adds that it's important for young people to start planning for retirement. He says that 401Ks offered by employers should be utilized.
