Winter Storm to Hit Central Illinois Late Tuesday, Wednesday

width=The National Weather Service in Lincoln says a winter storm taking shape across northern Texas on Christmas morning, will affect Central Illinois late Tuesday and Wednesday. Heavy snow is expected across eastern Illinois and western Indiana.

No travel impacts are expected during the daylight hours on Christmas Day, but snow is expected to spread northward across central and southeast Illinois late Tuesday evening, and continue through much of Wednesday before diminishing from west to east. Areas east of a Danville to Effingham line have the best potential for seeing at least 6 inches of snow out of this system, and some locations south of I-70 may see upwards of 10 or more inches of snow, especially toward Flora and Lawrenceville.

Snowfall amounts taper off to the west, with only a dusting expected northwest of the Illinois River. North winds of 15 to 25 mph will lead to some blowing and drifting snow as well.
Small adjustments in the forecast track would result in the axis of heaviest snow adjusting as well. Given the high travel activity associated with the holidays, people traveling across the Midwest on Christmas Day and Wednesday should check the latest forecasts before departing, and be prepared to make adjustments to travel plans as necessary.

Stay tuned to Regional Radio, and this on-line daily newspaper, for the latest on this developing winter storm.
