Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn remains optimistic that lawmakers will send him a solution to a monstrous pension problem next week despite the Senate's abrupt departure from the Capitol on Thursday.

The Senate canceled Friday's scheduled session, but President John Cullerton told members to be ready to return Tuesday after House action.

Spokeswoman Brooke Anderson says Quinn and his staff continue to meet with legislative leaders and "progress has been made" on resolving a $96 billion debt in state pension accounts.

The Senate planned no major pension action. Cullerton has proposed a scaled-down pension-reform plan as a starting point. The Senate approved it last spring.

A more comprehensive proposal is percolating in the House. The House plans to convene Sunday and work until Wednesday when the current General Assembly session ends.
