Local Legislators React To Lame Duck Session; Look Ahead

A 98th Illinois General Assembly was inaugurated Wednesday.

As family and friends were excited with the pomp and pageantry, members old and new talked about unfinished business from the 97th General Assembly. The old Legislature adjourned Tuesday without fixing the state's broken public pension system. State Representative Adam Brown said he hopes the House can focus on the much needed budgetary issues.

One other local Representative says he wasn't surprised nothing happened during the lame duck session. State Representative Bill Mitchell says he was not that surprised something wasn’t accomplished in the 97th General Assembly but he looks ahead positively toward the new legislative session.

Meanwhile, one local lawmaker is making the jump from the General Assembly to the Illinois Senate. Chapin Rose will make the jump and was sworn in on Wednesday. He says moving forward, pension reform remains the biggest issue facing both the House and Senate, and he feels lawmakers need to work together the way they did for Medicaid reform.

Lawmakers are scheduled to return to Springfield to take up work of the 98th General Assembly on the 30th of January.
