Notre Dame Confirms Te'o Victim Of Girlfriend Hoax

Notre Dame is calling star linebacker Manti Te'o [[ MAN-tye  TAY-oh ]] a victim of a hoax in which his supposed girlfriend died during the football season last year.  According to a university statement, someone using a fictitious name apparently ingratiated herself with Te'o and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia.  Authorities are still investigating the matter.  The statement comes on the heels of a Deadspin report that there is no record of the 22-year-old ever existing.  Te'o told "Sports Illustrated" that she had been in a serious car accident in September and was later diagnosed with leukemia.
