Safety Key During Cold Spells

You may not have to leave the house to know it's been bitter cold the past several days.

The American Red Cross has some things to keep in mind during this stretch of cold weather. Carl Baker, Executive Director of the Red Cross' Mid-Illinois Chapter says for those that may want to do their daily running or exercising in this weather, it's very important to dress in layers. It's also a good idea to always stretch and prepare before doing any physical activities outdoors.

Even though we haven't had much snow, snow shoveling can be physically demanding. Baker says several winter chores and activities can be demanding physically. The Red Cross has an app for your smartphone that will tell you signs of frostbite if you think you may be getting to that point.

Another thing to keep an eye on is your car. Baker notes it is important to keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle at all times with items to keep you warm and some snacks to provide energy. He also recommends keeping your car filled up at or over a half of a tank of gas during the winter months. This will help in case you get stranded on the side of the road and keeps the gas from freezing.

During cold spells like the one we're in, it is important to keep your home warm. Baker recommends keeping water running at a slow drip, so it won't freeze. He also says it's important to keep an eye on your neighbors, especially those who are elderly.
