Craig's List Becoming Place For People To Be Scammed

Law enforcement locally are battling scams that have mostly been targeted towards the senior citizen population, however, there is one scam that targets anyone who might do some shopping online.

The "Craig's List" scam targets those who may do some browsing on that website. Clinton Police Chief Mike Reidy explains this scam targets the seller of an item, who thinks they have a potential buyer, and they receive a check for well over the amount their item is being sold for. The seller is usually instructed to cash the check for an excessive amount of money, and send money and the item to the scammer posing as a buyer.

Chief Reidy cautions those who use Craig's List to first make sure the check you are sent clears the bank. He also suggests not sending an item or money off until that check has cleared.

The old adage, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is" applies here according to Chief Reidy. He says to use common sense when dealing with Craig's List buyers, or sellers. The Chief says scams are one of the more under-reported crimes in the area.
