Clinton City Council Entertaining Joining Mahomet Aquifer Coaltion

The Clinton City Council is considering joining the Mahomet Aquifer Coalition, an intergovernmental agreement to petition the US EPA to designate the Mahomet Aquifer as a sole source aquifer.

The City of Champaign hired Lane Hydro as a consulting firm to study the Mahomet Aquifer becoming sole source aquifer. Al Wehrmann studied the Mahomet Aquifer extensively and explains the to become a sole source aquifer, the aquifer must provide 50% of the drinking water in the area overlying the aquifer, as well as other communities served by the supply. US EPA guidelines also stipulate the service area can have no alternative water sources which could physically, legally, and economically supply all the water currently supplied by the aquifer.

If Clinton was to join the Coalition, it would be another voice, among many, to petition the EPA to designate the Mahomet Aquifer as a sole source aquifer. Wehrmann explains the US EPA can review any federally funded project that can contaminate the aquifer. The Coalition does not want federal funds to be used to potentially contaminate the water.

Wehrmann believes the sole source designation will have a great impact on local awareness. He notes it will not have an impact on the Clinton Landfill, however, he notes the more communities that join in the Coalition, the better the chance the Mahomet Aquifer gets that sole source designation.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow on Regional Radio News as we will outline the effects the Mahomet Aquifer has, the amount people it serves and how much people use it. The numbers will probably surprise you.
