Local Sheriff 'Frustrated' By Areas Substance Abuse

One local law enforcement official is voicing his frustrations over substance abuse in DeWitt County.

DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner says about 75% of reports that come across his desk involve substance abuse in some way or another. Sheriff Shofner encourages anyone who knows someone who may be struggling with alcohol or substance abuse to be aggressive and get them help.

The Sheriff explains during the 90s, there was a massive push to make people aware of the consequences of drunk driving. He says now his deputies are arresting people for DUIs several times a day in a week and at all times of the day and night. He says no matter how discouraging it gets, both on the roads, and in the courtrooms, he says they will continue to work to keep the roads safe.

While law enforcement can be dedicated to cracking down on DUIs all they want, Sheriff Shofner says this needs to be a concerted effort by those who are watching friends or family become victims of substance abuse.
