Springfield Utility To Repay FEMA Aid

A Springfield utility must repay nearly $800,000 in federal reimbursements it received after tornadoes struck central Illinois in March 2006.

Reports out of Springfield indicate City Water, Light and Power will return some of the damage reimbursements it got after the storm because the federal government says the utility shouldn't have received the money.

The utility has fought with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for years over damage claims from the tornadoes, but utility officials now say they've exhausted their appeals.

CWLP plans to ask the Springfield City Council for permission in the next few weeks to repay FEMA from the electric emergency repair account.

The utility paid nearly $12 million to repair power lines and poles and restore power to more than 50,000 customers after the 2006 tornadoes.
