Lincoln Community Beginning Sessions For Revitalization Efferts

The City of Lincoln's plan to revitalize their downtown begins as they have started a string of public meetings.

The City was the recipient of a grant from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for $675-thousand to spur downtown revitalization. Lincoln Mayor Keith Snyder feels the city already has a very good downtown, but they want to find out what can make it better. He explains the plans they have will find ways to do that.

Many may not realize, but there are actually two different downtown orientations. Mayor Snyder explains one is around their historic courthouse but the other is just a few blocks removed, along the railroad line.

The Mayor says there is a certain amount of business to draw from your own citizens, but part of the goal with this plan is to draw people from outside the area to come in and spend their day and money downtown. He compares a downtown setting to a mall. You have your anchor stores with small stores that fill in the rest of the area.

One major obstacle facing downtown Lincoln is the lack of parking for those who utilize the downtown area, especially during the day. The Mayor says it may sound "silly" for a small community like Lincoln, but he says there is at times, a need for somewhere for people to have access to parking.

On a positive note, Mayor Snyder says Lincoln currently has a very highly rated downtown in terms of "walkability" because of access to the courthouse, the post office, grocery stores, and restaurants. Hey says so much is within walking distance for downtown that it provides great opportunities for those that live close to downtown.
