Lt. Governor Unveil's 'Game Changing' Education Reform

Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon has announced potential education reforms that would make college more affordable to Illinois students.

Simon on Tuesday labeled the suggested reforms as game-changing.

She says affordability is the most significant barrier for students who want to pursue degrees at public institutions.

One of Simon's proposals would allow students to simultaneously enroll in community colleges and universities. She says students would be able to pay lower community college tuition rates and later transition seamlessly to a university.

Simon is also suggesting income tax waivers for students who earn higher education degrees in Illinois and choose to stay in the state upon graduation.

Simon's proposals follow her tour of the state's 12 public universities last fall when she met with students, teachers and administrators.
