DNR Conservation Receive New Boat Unique To Area

When boaters begin hitting the lakes this spring, they may notice the Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police strutting a new ride.

CPOs were recently awarded a grant from a US Coast Guard Force Security Grant that will provide them with a nice new boat built to the specifications of local CPOs. DNR Conservation Police Officer, Ray Wichus explains the new ride will be mainly used for sonar detail, but they will get it out for patrol purposes, which is when the general public will most likely see it.

There are going to be some extremely unique features. Wichus says the capabilities of the boat are far beyond anything he could ever imagined 25 years ago when he started as a CPO. Wichus explains the capabilities with the sonar on the new boat are far more reaching than anything they currently have.

It's the many features of the boat that make it one of the most unique boats of it's kind in Illinois and the midwest. Wichus explains it will be taken to Lake Shelbyville frequently, but he notes it will be available to wherever it is needed.

The boat is a 33-foot boat. Wichus is pleased the Department was able to obtain it and calls the boat "one of the best in the midwest".

Wichus says it should be another month before the boat arrives in Central Illinois.
