Clinton Police Makes 3 Arrests In Recent Car Burglaries

A rash of car burglaries in Clinton may be a step closer to being solved.

The Clinton Police reports last week three 13-year olds were arrested for a rash of car burglaries in Clinton. Police Chief Mike Reidy says this was a crime of opportunity, and these teens were bringing in almost $200 a night by picking up lose change in unlocked vehicles.

While many cars have been ransacked over the past several months, Chief Reidy speculates there are probably many more they do not know about because they haven't been reported. He says they have recovered some very nice items from vehicles that were rummaged through and nothing was reported, so they have no owner to return the items to.

The Chief has several tips to prevent being a victim of burglaries like these. He says to first lock doors to vehicles and garages. They have learned from the kids they were going through unlocked garages and finding unlocked cars. He adds, if possible, keep porch lights or outside garage lights on to keep the car from being hidden by darkness.

One other suggestion the Chief makes is to get to know your neighbors. He feels there is something to be said about being a good neighbor and looking out for one another. Chief Reidy feels looking out for your neighbors won't necessarily prevent these types of crimes, but he believes someone saw these crimes taking place, but did not say anything.

Chief Reidy says there are a lot of items they have recovered they do not have an owner for. He is imploring vehicle owners who suspect their car was broken, or have discovered they are missing something from their vehicle to contact the police department at 935-9441.
