Second Winter Storm Bears Keeping Safety In Mind

A second major winter storm is expected to hit much of downstate Illinois starting throughout the day.

With wintery weather expected to continue throughout the day, the American Red Cross has some things to keep in mind. Carl Baker, Executive Director of the Red Cross' Mid-Illinois Chapter says for those that may want to do their daily running or exercising in this weather, it's very important to dress in layers. It's also a good idea to always stretch and prepare before doing any physical activities outdoors.

Baker says several winter chores and activities, such as shoveling snow, can be physically demanding. The Red Cross has an app for your smartphone that will tell you signs of frostbite if you think you may be getting to that point.

Another thing to keep an eye on is your car. Baker notes it is important to keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle at all times with items to keep you warm and some snacks to provide energy. He also recommends keeping your car filled up at or over a half of a tank of gas during the winter months. This will help in case you get stranded on the side of the road and keeps the gas from freezing.

Baker also notes it's important to keep an eye on your neighbors, especially those who are elderly.
