Snow Piled Up In Parts of Central Illinois

Roads in parts of Illinois grew slick and some schools and government offices closed as the latest winter storm slid across the state.

The National Weather Service says some heavy snow piled up early Tuesday in west-central Illinois. Both Galesburg and Macomb had more than 5 inches on the ground.

In Peoria drivers found some roads closed early Tuesday and others hard to travel.

Weather Service meteorologist Chuck Schaffer told The Journal Star in Peoria that the heavy wet snow was falling quickly, at 2 inches an hour.

Schools in East Peoria, Canton and other towns closed.

Slick roads led to a number of accidents early Tuesday in the Bloomington area.

Further east less snow fell. In Champaign mostly rain had fallen by midday.
