Rauner Campaign Ad Uses Made Up Headlines

The Republican candidate for Illinois governor's most recent campaign ad is being called into question for tailoring headlines from news stories to look more critical of his opponent.

Bruce Rauner's (ROW'-nurz) 30-second commercial called "Headlines" overlays what appear to be newspaper headlines over images of Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. They criticize his record on jobs, schools and a troubled anti-violence program.

But a review of the commercial finds several cases where the so-called headlines don't accurately reflect the source cited.

Using quotes and headlines in campaign commercials is a commonplace practice. But political analyst Thom Serafin says Rauner's commercial's construction detracts from the points it's trying to make.

Rauner's campaign says the phrases in the commercial were condensed for time and space constraints.
