Illinois EPA To Collect Household Toxic Waste

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will collect household hazardous waste collection in six communities this fall.

The agency said Wednesday that residents can bring leftover chemicals and other toxic wastes to sites in DuPage, Henry, Logan, Marion, Ogle and Piatt counties during the one-day events in September and October.

Accepted material includes oil-based paints, chemical cleaners, pharmaceutical products, antifreeze, weed killer, batteries. mercury-infused products and scores of other toxins.

Officials say many residents have materials in basements, garages and sheds that they should not put out for regular trash collection.

Explosives, fire extinguishers, agricultural and medical waste and auto batteries are not accepted at the events.

The EPA also supports long-term collection facilities in Cook, DuPage, Lake, Winnebago counties.
