Decatur Reconsiders Radios After Lightning Strike

The Decatur City Council will consider rescinding its approval of a $1.4 million contract for radio communications after officials say a backup system failed when lightning knocked it out.

Accoruding to reports, the council will meet on today.

Officials had voted to purchase a Motorola Solutions Inc. system called StarCom21. It's been used by city police and the Macon County Sheriff's Department since 2009.

But lightning knocked out StarCom21 on Aug. 5 and a backup system failed. So law enforcement agencies had to revert to the former analog radio system for 21 hours.

Officials say the system failed again for 35 minutes on Aug. 9.

A Motorola Solutions spokesman contacted Sunday by The Associated Press did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
