NCAA Football Notes

 width=The top-five college football teams remain unchanged in the latest "USA Today" Coaches Poll.  Florida State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon and Auburn make up the top teams in the nation.  Georgia moved up from eighth to sixth while Baylor is up to seventh from the ninth spot.  After a road loss to Oregon, Michigan State fell from sixth down to 13th.  Texas A&M, LSU and USC round out of the top-ten while Notre Dame moved up to 11th after thrashing Michigan.  Virginia Tech jumped into the polls at 19th after cruising past Ohio State on the road, though the Buckeyes remain one spot ahead of the Hokies.  OSU fell from seventh to 18th. 

>>SMU's Jones Steps Down

(Dallas, TX) -- Southern Methodist University head football coach June Jones is stepping down for personal reasons. The moves comes less than nine months after Jones signed an extension through 2017. Associate head coach/defensive coordinator Tom Mason will take over the coaching reins. SMU is 0-and-2 on the young season and went 36-and-43 in six-plus years under Jones. The Mustangs reached four straight bowl games before going 5-and-7 last season.

>>UCF, Stanford Announce Football Series

(Orlando, FL) -- Central Florida and Stanford are set to meet on the gridiron for the first time ever. The schools have announced a home-and-home series that has the Cardinal hosting the Knights September 12th, 2015. Stanford will travel to UCF on September 14th, 2019. It will be the first time Stanford plays a team from the state of Florida as well as the first time UCF is scheduled to play a California program.

>>USC's Haden Issues Apology

(Los Angeles, CA) -- USC athletic director Pat Haden is trying to make amends for his behavior during the Trojans win over Stanford on Saturday. Haden was caught on camera arguing with an official on the sideline. The AD released a statement through the school that stated "I apologized to Commissioner Scott, to the game officials, to Stanford and to the fans for any distraction I might have caused during Saturday's football game. In retrospect, I should not have approached the game officials. I should have waited until after the game and gone through the appropriate channels. In the best interests of our team and our coaches, I will stay off the sidelines for our next games." The 2-and-0 Trojans are at Boston College on Saturday.
