Inmates Busy Making Signs, Furniture, Other Products

Illinois prisoners impact your everyday lives more than you may think. Every time you see a stop sign, a park bench, or even a barbeque grill at a state park, you can give thanks to someone who's behind bars.

The inmates also make office furniture, uniforms, mattresses, sheets, and more. They even process meats and other foods that are served at prisons in Illinois and other states. But contrary to popular belief, they do not make Illinois license plates. About 950 inmates are on the payrolls every day. They can make between thirty-cents and one-sixty-an hour depending on their job and skill level.
