Peoria Cricket Group Attracts Indian Immigrants

A group of cricket enthusiasts is helping immigrants from India feel more at home in central Illinois.

Reports indicate the Cricket Association of Peoria, a nonprofit that supports cricket teams and hosts matches, attracts nearly 300 players and their families, president of the organization, say it's been exciting to see it grow from a few teams to about 17 or 18 teams.

The Cricket Association of Peoria mainly relies on sponsors, including Citizens Equity First Credit Union and Geometric Engineering Inc., to fund the total cost of $9,000 per season, running from May to mid-September, according to Kadium. The organization hopes to get more people involved by increasing awareness of cricket, he said.

Cricket is one of the only games played by most people of Indian descent, cricket player Rakesh Vundru said.
