Cardinals, Cubs Win

(Chicago, IL) -- Rookie Kyle Hendricks fired seven innings of one-run ball to lead the Cubs to a 3-1 win over the Reds and a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field. Hendricks improved to 7-and-2 on the year. Hector Rondon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save. Luis Valbuena plated a run and scored while Ryan Kalish and Chris Valaika also drove in a run each for the Cubs, who have won four of five since a seven-game losing streak. Yorman Rodriguez knocked in the lone run for Cincinnati, which dropped its fourth straight. Daniel Corcino allowed two runs in five-and-two-thirds frames to suffer his first career loss.

(St. Louis, MO) -- Adam Wainwright tossed a complete-game shutout leading the Cardinals to a 2-0 win against the Brewers in the second of three at Busch Stadium. Wainwright struck out seven and allowed seven hits on his way to his 19th victory. Johnny Peralta had the only RBI for St. Louis, which is still two-and-half games ahead of the Pirates for first place in the NL Central. Carlos Gomez and Gerardo Parra each had two hits in the loss. Mike Fiers fell to 6-and-3, allowing one earned run in seven innings. The Brewers are two-and-half games behind Pittsburgh for the second Wild Card spot in the NL.

(Kansas City, MO) -- Lorenzo Cain went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer as the Royals defeated the White Sox 6-2 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Alcides Escobar added a solo shot and scored twice for the Royals, who moved within a half-game of the Tigers for first place in the AL Central. Detroit lost 8-4 in Minnesota on Wednesday. Yordano Ventura struck out seven over seven innings of one-run, three-hit ball to up his mark to 13-and-10. Adam Eaton and Alexei Ramirez plated a run each for Chicago. Chris Sale slipped to 12-and-4 after allowing five runs in five frames.

(Chicago, IL) -- Cubs prospect Kris Bryant was named the team's Minor League Player of the Year earlier in the week and was honored at Wrigley Field last night. The 22-year-old third baseman split time in 2014 with Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. He hit .325 with 43 homers and 110 RBI between the two clubs.
