Peoria Nonprofit Helps Veterans With Housework

A Peoria nonprofit group is aiding veterans in central Illinois with free home repairs and yard cleanups.

Reports indicate, the Illinois Valley Fuller Center for Housing has done 20 home repairs and 70 yard cleanups in Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties since its founding in November 2013. Many veterans that the group helps are in their 80s and served in World War II, president Greg Woith said.

The organization primarily does light repairs such as painting and fixing windows because of limited equipment, but has also removed carpeting and redone flooring, Woith said. The group plans to start rehabilitating houses and selling them to area veterans next year.

Veteran and Fuller Center volunteer Sherwood Dees said volunteering is a way for him to give back to other people who served the country.
