Sox Lose; Cards Finish Regular Season on Road; Jeter Leaves Yankee Stadium In Style

(Chicago, IL) -- Eric Hosmer homered and drove in two as the Royals reduced their magic number to clinch a playoff berth to one with a 6-3 win over the White Sox in Chicago. Lorenzo Cain went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for KC, which remains two games behind Detroit for first in the AL Central and is now one game ahead of Oakland for the top Wild Card spot. Kelvin Herrera got the win and Greg Holland earned his 45th save. Josh Phegley hit a two-run homer for the Sox, who have dropped three straight. Jose Quintana was tagged for five runs in seven-and-a-third frames to dip to 9-and-11 with the loss.

(Bronx, NY) -- The Captain has played his final home game in Yankees pinstripes. Derek Jeter wrote himself a fairytale ending with an RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Yankees in a 6-5 win over the Orioles at the Stadium. Jeter finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored in his final game from the Bronx. The magical moment was only made possible after closer David Robertson blew a save in the ninth by allowing a pair of homers and three runs. The Yankees close out the season with three games at Fenway Park this weekend against the Boston Red Sox.

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Four-time 20-game winner Dave Stewart is the new general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He takes over for the fired Kevin Towers. Stewart will be formally introduced at a Friday press conference. The D'backs have also hired Los Angeles Dodgers executive De Jon Watson as their senior vice president of baseball operations. Both will report to Diamondbacks CEO Tony La Russa.

After retiring as a player following the 1995 season, Stewart worked in the front offices of the Oakland A's, San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays. He also served as a pitching coach for the Padres, Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers. The 57-year-old has been operating his own sports agency, Sports Management Partners, since 2002.
