Pekin Police Launch New Motorcycle Patrol Unit

The Pekin Police Department has launched a new motorcycle patrol unit.

Police hit the streets of Pekin on motorcycles Wednesday for the first time in 40 years. Chief Greg Nelson says two Harley Davidson motorcycles will be used to improve traffic control and accident response. Nelson says the department is responding to a recent citizen poll that showed traffic problems were a main concern.

Nelson says the bikes are being leased for $3,000 per year and all of the costs throughout the next two years will be covered with funds donated by the Pekin Police Foundation.

Nelson says the department hasn't conducted motorcycle patrols since at least the '60s.
