Students Encouraged to Participate In Area School Breakfast Programs

With school back in session, the importance of a good breakfast should be emphasized to students.

Breakfast is one of the major links to finding success in the classroom. Monica Nyman, with the St. Louis Dairy Council, explains it's important for both kids and adults alike. Lack of breakfast can cause several side effects which can impair students during the morning hours at school. Nyman stresses the fact that breakfast allows kids to think better in morning classes.

Nyman notes most schools offer breakfast programs each day for students. She adds kids who qualify for free or reduced lunches will for breakfast also. Parents can check school websites to see daily breakfast menus. Nyman says sending kids to school for breakfast can also save time in the morning for most parents.

Only half of students receiving free or reduced lunches are taking advantage of breakfast. Nyman explains some schools are implementing non-traditional breakfasts in order to combat the issue. This program brings breakfast right into the classroom for students.

Nyman says research show that a solid breakfast also helps to reduce discipline issues in schools as well as academic.
