University of Illinois Sees Turning Point As Election Nears

Political experts say the University of Illinois Board of Trustees finds itself at a potential turning point as Election Day approaches.

The school's main campus in Champaign-Urbana is to choose a new president by late November. The next governor of Illinois - whether incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn or the GOP's Bruce Rauner - will decide if three members of the board will continue. That includes Chairman Chris Kennedy.

Kennedy's term, along with the terms of Pamela Strobel and Ed McMillan, all expire in early January. The school's Chicago campus also is searching for a chancellor.

According to reports, University of Illinois political science professor Brian Gaines explains so many possible changes haven't presented themselves since the state started appointing instead of electing trustees in the mid-1990s.
