Normal Paying More To Recycle Electronics

A central Illinois municipality is seeing increased costs in recycling old electronics.

According to reports, Normal Public Works director Wayne Aldrich explains the city paid a contractor around $6,700 last month. Usually, the municipality doesn't pay a cent to recycle electronics.

Environmentalists blame the rising costs on low annual recycling goals the state set for manufacturers under a federal law. Whenever manufacturers meet that goal, they can pull funding for the recycling process without penalty.

Ecology Action Center's executive director says the companies begin sending money toward other states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania where recycling quotas are higher and penalties are stiffer.
