The Champaign County Board has voted against using a 35-year-old Urbana jail as a correctional facility.
But officials say the facility, which is located across Main Street from the county courthouse, could be used as a possible sheriff's office.
According to reports, a consortium of local engineers and planners is working on developing a sheriff's operations master plan for the county that looks at the future of the downtown jail, as well as an east Urbana satellite jail and the sheriff's office.
The county board is expected to receive the completed master plan to review by early 2015.
