University of Illinois Prices Renovation On Altgeld Hall

The University of Illinois is looking at ways to renovate one of the oldest buildings on the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Altgeld Hall was built in 1897. When it was built it was one of just three buildings on the quad.

Since then it's been the university library, the home of the College of Law and the university's business office. Since 1956 it's housed the Department of Mathematics.

But much of the heavily used building isn't handicapped accessible.

According to reports, a university feasibility study put the cost of renovating Altgeld and nearby Illini Hall at about $90 million. Now the university will identify potential public and private funding sources.

Matthew Tomaszewski is associate provost for capital planning. He says the renovation is a top campus priority.
